Prioritizing Sustainable Mining in the DRC
Mining Companies Embrace Sustainability at DRC Mining Week

The United Nations Global Compact recently participated in the DRC Mining Week, a premier event that brought together mining industry leaders to discuss the future of sustainable mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This year's theme, "Prioritizing durable mining and local processing in the DRC", highlighted the immense opportunities for mining companies to embrace sustainability and durability in their operations.
The event provided a platform for the UN Global Compact to share its vision for a sustainable future with mining companies. Speaking at the session, the Africa Head of the UN Global Compact, Dr. Herve Lado, who spoke on the topic "Sustainability Plans and Responsible Mining" emphasized the importance of protecting human rights, promoting gender equality and children's rights, fighting corruption, preserving the environment, and improving working conditions in mines.
Under the leadership of the Executive Director, Ms. Jessica Webe, and the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr. Celestin Mukeba, of the DRC Global Compact Network, the challenge of strengthening the mining sector's commitment to sustainability is well underway.
The message was clear - commitment to sustainability is no longer a cost, but an investment with tangible returns, including good reputation, rentability, and improved performances for all stakeholders.
The event marked a significant step forward in promoting sustainable mining practices in the DRC, positioning the country as a "solution country" for sustainability.
