On August 28, 2024, the Global Compact South Africa took a significant step towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by launching the second Voluntary National Review (VNR) in Sandton, Johannesburg. This milestone event brought together key stakeholders from the government, private sector, and civil society to assess progress towards the SDGs.
Led by Dr. Achieng Ojwang, Executive Director of the Global Compact Network South Africa (GCNSA), the VNR presentation to Minister Maropene Ramokgopa underscored the importance of collective action. The review drew on insights from 132 companies and over 300 individuals, providing richer data through roundtable discussions, case studies, and research.
Top SDG Priorities for the Private Sector:
Nelson Muffuh, UN Resident Coordinator, emphasized the need for whole-of-society involvement and investment in green infrastructure and youth for SDG transition. Minister Ramokgopa stressed the role of collaboration in driving innovation.
The private sector's commitment to the SDGs was exemplified by Absa Group and Anglo American's involvement. Absa Group, as the lead sponsor, pledged support for making an impact in the South African community. Anglo American highlighted initiatives like the Women in Mining Program and greenhouse gas emission reduction.
This united front towards sustainable development demonstrates South Africa's dedication to achieving the SDGs.
