The UN Global Compact Network Ghana, on February 20th, 2024, hosted the organization's first-ever CEOs Breakfast Meeting at the Ghana Chamber of Mines. The event focused on the crucial need to integrate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into business operations to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
During the meeting, Mr. Sulemanu Koney, Board Chairman of the Local Network, stressed the urgency for businesses to increase their efforts in sustainable development. He emphasized that current progress towards the 2030 SDG targets is insufficient.
“As you may be aware, more companies are talking about sustainability, speeches are being given and pledges are being made. Despite this, there is not enough progress happening to achieve the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development. In fact, we need to double our efforts,” noted Mr. Sulemanu Koney.
Mr. Tolu Kweku Lacroix, Executive Director of the Network, provided an in-depth presentation on the SDG Stocktake Report and the ForwardFaster Initiative.
He noted that “Ghana has done quite well in some areas of the SDGs but much more needs to be done in the next six and a half years by accelerating efforts, especially from the private sector, which must make significant contributions to support the attainment of the goals.”
CEOs in attendance discussed their organizations' progress towards the SDGs and identified challenges they face in achieving these goals. The breakfast also provided a valuable networking opportunity. Media outlets, including JoyNews, Ghana News Agency, and Business & Financial Times newspaper, covered the event.
