The United Nations Global Compact in Angola is partnering with key stakeholders to spearhead transformative initiatives to advance sustainable development and climate action across the country.
In a pivotal move towards sustainability, the UN Global Compact in Angola recently hosted two important events, the Angola Policy Enablement Roundtable, and a session on Climate Change and the UN Global Compact Portfolio, and participated actively in a third: the II Conference on Sustainability in the Banking Sector.
Angola Policy Enablement Roundtable
Held on June 18th, the Angola Policy Enablement Roundtable brought together local partners from the private sector, public institutions, and academia. The roundtable served as a platform for dialogue and consultation on "Policy Enablers for Sustainable Development Goals in the Private Sector." Key topics included Digitalization, Energy Transition, Decent Work, and Social Protection. The consultation aimed to assess Angola's current policy landscape and identify the main challenges impacting the private sector's capacity to engage in sustainable practices, particularly concerning Digitalization and Energy Transition.
Climate Change and the UN Global Compact Portfolio
On the same day, June 18th, the UN Global Compact in Angola hosted a session under the #ToolTalkings initiative focused on "Climate Action and the United Nations Global Compact Portfolio." Led by Lucas Ribeiro, Senior Manager of the Global Compact's Climate Ambition Accelerator, the session highlighted the importance of climate action in business. Participants delved into key concepts like NetZero, the #ForwardFaster initiative, #SBTI, and the UN Global Compact accelerator programs. The interactive session fostered a robust exchange of experiences and insights, helping companies better understand the impact of their actions on the environment.
II Conference on Sustainability in the Banking Sector
On June 25th, the II Conference on Sustainability in the Banking Sector convened key stakeholders to explore the banking sector's critical role in fostering sustainable practices. The discussions centered on mitigating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) risks, alongside strategies to build a more resilient and equitable economy. The Country Manager in Angola for the UN Global Compact, Eliana Pereira dos Santos, played a significant role as the panel moderator on "Governance and ESG in the Financial Sector." She notes that "We extend our gratitude to ABANC - the Angolan Banking Association - for their invitation to this vital event, underscoring the banking sector's influence in driving sustainable development".
These initiatives reflect the UN Global Compact's unwavering commitment to catalyzing sustainable development in Angola, driving collective action towards a more sustainable future.
