Driving Sustainable Impacts in Africa

Global Compact’s Africa Hub and Networks Session at GABI 2024

As part of Unstoppable Africa 2024, the Africa Hub and the 10 Networks of the UN Global Compact on the continent will curate a side-event themed "Driving Sustainable Impacts in Africa with Digital and Energy Transition Solutions" on 25 September 2024, from 3.00-5.00pm at Convene, 101 Park Ave.


The objectives of the event will be to showcase the impacts of sustainable investments of the private sector in Africa, while illustrating the UN Global Compact's approach with the private sector on the continent. Two key areas to be presented include:


Digital Transformation: How are our business participants in Africa are using digital solutions and investments to transform their businesses and provide sustainable solutions. Impact stories illustrating the use of digital solutions and the changes observed will be showcased.


Energy Access and Transition: There will be showcased solutions integrating or resulting in the reduction of greenhouse emissions in the energy consumption or production, or an enhanced use of renewables, by Africa participants with tangible impacts.


This session will welcome participants attending GABI from the private sector and partners of the Global Compact in Africa.

  • From insights about how the UNGC’s global and Africa strategies resonate with digital and energy transitions, the fireside chat will explore the solutions that your company and other businesses are developing across the continent and how you are leveraging this leadership to drive change through your role in the Board of the UN Global Compact.

  • Sanda Ojiambo, Assistant Secretary General, Executive Director of UN Global Compact.

  • 75mn - Digital and Energy Transitions: Driving sustainable impacts with digital solutions and energy transition.
  • The panel of four companies’ representatives to discuss the achievements in the impact stories and extend the reflection on what is needed to bring them to scale. With Q&A.
  • Egypt: In line with the Paris agreement, Egytrans’ vision is to significantly reduce its carbon emissions by 2030, using cycle time for reporting and percentage of energy optimization and reduction, to measure and track its results more scientifically, integrating in their risk assessment climate risks, energy consumption recording and management, and working to instigate wider change in Egypt’s freight ecosystem. Panelist: Abir Leheta, CEO Egytrans.
  • Nigeria: Oando Clean Energy’s Sustainable Transport Initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance energy efficiency, and promote cleaner and more sustainable transportation, starting in Nigeria, by stimulating Electric Vehicle (EV) adoption that will support the transition of the country’s current combustion engine mass transport vehicles to EVs. Panelist: Akinbode Bamgboye, Chief Finance Officer, Oando Clean Energy (OCEL).
  • South Africa: Through an innovative use of technology, specifically reverse vending machines (RVMs), in collaboration with Imagined Earth, a green technology and recycling infrastructure provider, Anglo American develops Waste at Work that addresses environmental concerns, creates income opportunities, and empowers their mining communities. Panelist: Itumeleng Mogatusi-Sekgota, Sustainability Pathways and Planning Specialist- Africa & Australia, Anglo American.
  • Digital Expert: Chris Diaz, Executive Chairman, Adili Group, Kenya.
  • Energy Expert: Adaku Ufere, Africa Energy Expert.
  • Moderated by Naomi Nwokolo, Executive Director Global Compact Network Nigeria, in coordination with Walaa El Husseiny, ED Egypt Network; Judy Njino, ED Kenya Network; and Achieng Ojwang, ED South Africa Network.
